The core problem: muscle is denser than fat
Muscle tissue is significantly denser than fat tissue, meaning it weighs more per unit of volume. Two people can look completely different and take up different amounts of space, yet weigh the same — or, more relevantly here, a muscular person can weigh considerably more than a lean, untrained person of the same height without carrying any more fat at all.
Because BMI is purely a function of weight and height, it has no way to separate "heavier because of muscle" from "heavier because of fat." It just sees a higher number on the scale relative to height, and applies the same category regardless of cause.
Who this affects most
- Strength athletes — powerlifters, bodybuilders, and strongman competitors routinely score "overweight" or "obese" on BMI despite very low body fat percentages.
- Rugby, football, and similar contact-sport athletes — high muscle mass combined with above-average height and weight frequently pushes BMI into the overweight range.
- Serious recreational lifters — you don't need to be a professional athlete for this to apply. Consistent resistance training over years measurably shifts body composition in ways BMI can't detect.

What to check instead — or alongside BMI
- Body fat percentage — even a rough estimate from a smart scale or calipers tells you far more than BMI alone about your actual composition.
- Waist-to-height ratio — a simple measurement that correlates well with visceral fat and cardiovascular risk, and isn't thrown off by muscle mass.
- Performance and recovery markers — strength, endurance, resting heart rate, and how you recover from training are practical signals BMI was never built to capture.
None of this means BMI is useless for athletes — it just means the "overweight" or "obese" label shouldn't be taken at face value if you know your body fat percentage is low and your training tells a different story. Use BMI as one input, not the deciding one.
