BMI vs. body fat percentage: what's the difference?

They both try to answer "how healthy is my weight?" — but they measure completely different things, and they can disagree with each other more often than you'd expect.

What each one actually measures

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a ratio of your weight to your height. It's a single calculation: weight divided by height squared. It doesn't look at your body directly at all — it's a population-level statistical tool that estimates whether your weight is proportional to your height, based on averages across large groups of people.

Body fat percentage measures something more specific: how much of your total body weight is made up of fat tissue, versus muscle, bone, organs, and water. It's a direct measurement (or close estimate) of body composition, not just a size ratio.

In short: BMI asks "is your weight typical for your height?" Body fat percentage asks "what is your weight actually made of?"

Why they can disagree

This is where it gets interesting. Because BMI has no way to distinguish muscle from fat, two people can have the exact same BMI and completely different bodies.

Unlike BMI, body fat percentage requires actual measurement, which means accuracy varies a lot by method:

Which one should you pay attention to?

For most people, BMI is a reasonable first screening tool — it's free, instant, and correlates with health risk across large populations. That's exactly why public health bodies use it.

But if you're an athlete, very muscular, older, or your BMI result surprises you, body fat percentage (or another measure like waist circumference) gives a more accurate picture of what's actually going on. Neither number tells the whole story on its own — think of them as two different lenses, not competing verdicts.
